The Shadow Prince Teaser Tuesday #9: Meet Joe Vince (with gifs) and Lunar Chronicles Giveaway

You know what's infinitely better than a Monday? A Tuesday. Especially if it's a THE SHADOW PRINCE Teaser Tuesday!

Today we get to meet another one of my favorite characters from THE SHADOW PRINCE: Daphne's father--the Joe Vince. Daphne has barely met her famous father (he's a pretty big deal in the music biz...) four times in her life, so you can imagine her surprise and apprehension when he shows up out of the blue with a court order for full custody of her and the offer to attend a prestigious music program at a ritzy private school in California.

I've always had a very clear idea of what Joe would be like, and more specifically, what he would look like. I didn't even have to think about it. It was obvious as soon as I knew who the character was.  Imagine, if you will, a cross between David Tennant (specifically his character in Fright Night) and the lead singer from The National, Matt Berninger. Picture a British, mid 40's, leather pants wearing, binge drinking, but extremely talented rocker with the soul of quirky dork.

To help you picture him, here's a quick teaser of how Daphne describes him their first morning together in her new home.

"Joe finds his glasses: thick-framed, nerdy, hipster specs that clash with his leather pants, skull rings, and long, rocker hair.

Three things I know for sure about Joe so far.  The longer portions of his hair are extensions, he never wears his glasses in public, and even though he tries to pull off an ubercool, leather-clad, Top Forty rocker persona for the press, when I listen real closely, I can hear that he has more of this geeky, Indie singer-songwriter vibe. It's always baffled me, the few times we've met."

Are you seeing it yet?

I hope so, but to help you out here are a few visuals (because who can resist a good David Tennant gif?):

Just picture David Tennant in Fright Night. . .

in a mash-up with Matt Berninger of The National...

As an added bonus, here's an awesome song by The National:

THE SHADOW PRINCE Teaser Tuesday #8: Save the Cat! (and giveaway)

It's Tuesday and that means it's time for a new teaser from THE SHADOW PRINCE! Today's teaser is about one of the most lovable characters in TSP--and one who isn't even a person. According to Greek mythology, Hades, the god of the Underworld, kept a giant, monstrous, three-headed dog named Cerberus as a pet.

So I decided that my character Haden Lord (who was inspired by Hades) should also have a pet. And naturally his pet would be . . .

the world's smallest cat!

Brimstone, Haden's cat (or hellcat, to be more precise) is based on this picture of Mr. Peebles (the Guinness Book of World Records' holder for smallest living cat in the world) but she looks more like my blue kitty, Ava, when she was just a wee girl.

Brimstone is described as being "barely bigger than a guinea pig . . ."

But don't let her size fool you! Brim is a full-grown cat, and she hates being called a kitten. That's something you should keep in mind since Haden warns that you should never get a hellcat angry!

So why give Haden, a prince of the Underworld and a trained warrior, a pocket-sized feline for a pet?

First off, because it's unexpected. Secondly, if you follow me on Instagram, you've probably noticed that I like kittens. And thirdly, because I think it's important to find a way to show what makes a character--especially a character who might seem less-than-human or not all that emotionally available at first--lovable or redeemable. There are several ways of doing this, and in screen writing, showing this redeeming quality (or moment of compassion) is called "Save the Cat." Two of my favorite ways of creating a likable character is by showing something or someone that my character loves, or by showing who loves my character despite their flaws--even if that someone is a pet.

Here's an excerpt from THE SHADOW PRINCE about Brimstone:

"She's a tiny little thing, but a good deal bigger than the puff of fur she'd been when I rescued her from one of the owls' clutches when she was only a few days old. As a runty newborn, she'd been tossed out of the nest by her mother, left to die in the Wastelands. That's why I'd saved her--and that's why she rarely left my side and could always find me no matter where I was--we'd both been rejected by the only family we'd ever really known. That made us kin."

So Haden "saves the cat" by literally saving a (hell)cat. But Brimstone isn't just a plot device, she's an important character in the book. I think of her as the older sister that Haden always needed. She scolds him when he's being thoughtless, prods him to do the right thing, and even tries to help him out with the ladies on occasion. Brimstone is fiercely loyal and deeply bonded to Haden, and he to her--a connection that plays out in important, and hopefully unexpected, ways in the book.

For more Brim and Haden, be sure to check out THE SHADOW PRINCE on March 11th!

(BTW, I kind of dream of the day someone does some Haden and Brimstone fanart!)

Now for a giveaway!

Brimstone loves music so I am giving away one of my silver lyre necklaces. Brim also comes from a long line of ancient mythological creatures, so I am also giving away a signed copy of RELIC by Renee Collins, an exciting book about people who harness special powers from the bones of ancient magical creatures.

THE SHADOW PRINCE Teaser Tuesday #5

Greetings, friends!

Yesterday was my birthday and Hubs took me on a dessert tour of Salt Lake City--and now I am stuck in bed with a sugar+gluten hangover. (But man was it worth it!) My hands are so swollen with inflammation that I can barely type, so I am going to keep today's Teaser Tuesday short and super duper upbeat!

Today I am giving you a sneak peek at the inspiration for one of my antagonists: Simon Fitzgerald.

Simon is tasked with the job of overseeing Haden while he is on his quest to the mortal world, and the inspiration for his character was born out of this question that would pop into my mind while watching one of my favorite sitcoms:

What if Chris Traeger from PARKS AND RECREATION were evil?

Yep, those are the kind of weird questions that pop into my head on a regular basis. I think that's why I'm a writer. (Or possibly just crazy?) But answering that question in THE SHADOW PRINCE led to a character that was *quite literally* the funnest antagonist to write.

No giveaway this week, but I leave you with the gift of THIS VIDEO compilation of some of *the best* Chris Traeger-isms from the show. Just watch and think: What if this guy were evil?
(Sorry embedding the video here was blocked, so you'll have to click on the embedded link.)

Winners from last week's Teaser Tuesday giveaway are:
 Jessica@a GREAT read
Nicole Mainardi
 Rebecca Hipworth

(Winners, if you didn't receive an email from me, hit the contact button in the menu and send me your shipping address to claim your prize. All prizes must be claimed within 30 days or will be forfeit.)

Everyone, be sure to come back for next week's Teaser Tuesday! (Hint: I'm giving away a signed book from one of my most favorite authors.)

THE SHADOW PRINCE Teaser Tuesday #2

I know it's late in the day, but it's STILL Tuesday, so that means it's time for another teaser from THE SHADOW PRINCE.

But first, I must announce the winner of Teaser Tuesday #1. Drum roll please . . . .

And the winner is: Michelle Chaffee!****

Now for Teaser Tuesday #2:

I've often said that THE SHADOW PRINCE is a crazy-fun mish-mash of all the things I love, rolled together with some Bree Despain-style romance.  This is especially true when it comes to Haden Lord--the disgraced prince of the Underrealm and one of the book's main characters. So today I thought I would share with you my inspiration board for Haden--featuring a few of my favorite fictional hotties.

CLICK HERE TO SEE MY HADEN LORD INSPIRATION BOARD ON PINTEREST.

Then be sure to come back and enter this week's giveaway:

I was privileged enough to get a signed ARC or DEFY from my friend Sara B. Larson. I read it (and it's awesome, by the way) and now I have her permission to give my copy away to one of you!

Enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below to win my signed ARC of DEFY and also a Shadow Prince silver Lyre necklace.***

(Why the lyre necklace?  Because the lyre is the ancient Greek symbol for music and storytelling. And music plays a very important role in THE SHADOW PRINCE, where it is forbidden for one character and essential to another.)

THE SHADOW PRINCE TEASER TUESDAY #1 (and giveaway!)

You guys, we are only 3 months of Tuesdays away from the release of THE SHADOW PRINCE on March 11th, 2014!!! To celebrate, starting today and then every Tuesday until launch, I am going to host THE SHADOW PRINCE TEASER TUESDAY in which I will be posting special teasers like snippets from the book, pictures or Pinterest boards of people or things that inspired the story/characters, and even a few fun videos.  And since no celebration is complete without prizes, we'll even have a bunch of those, too!

To kick off our very first Teaser Tuesday, I thought I would start with one of the most important parts of the book--the first line.  Would you believe that I wrote 24 different openings to THE SHADOW PRINCE before landing on just the right one? Good then, because it was actually 28!

But then the perfect line came to me--in the shower of all places--and everything started to click into place: character, setting, word-building, stakes. It was the line that prompted a dozen questions in my head, and finding the answers became a book.

So now I present to you, THE SHADOW PRINCE TEASER TUESDAY #1:

And as some of you might have noticed, there's a double teaser in that image. THE SHADOW PRINCE is going through a cover redesign, and while I can't show you the whole thing yet, I got permission to show you the little teaser snippet of the title treatment above. Isn't it stellar?

NOW FOR THE GIVEAWAY!!!:***

Enter to win a signed ARC of THE SHADOW PRINCE (which is now a limited edition with the old cover) and a beautiful lyre necklace (the importance of which you'll know after you read the book).  Also, I'm giving away signed copies of the Raven Boys books.  Check out the lovely prize pack:

Enter to win using the Rafflecopter below, and be sure to come back every Tuesday until March 11th to get more teasers and enter to win more prizes!

And feel free to grab the teaser image and share it on your blog, tumblr, pinterest, wherever!

*** Contest is open internationally. The winner will be announced next Tuesday. Prize must be claimed within 30 days or will be forfeit.

Fantasy Casting Wrap-up and Winners

Sorry for the blog silence over the last couple of weeks. It has been a whirlwind of tasks and events, and I've obviously fallen behind in my regularly scheduled duties. I don't think I've replied to an email in almost a month. For shame.

But on the bright side, it's been a fun whirlwind. I got to go to the filming of the TLS book-trailer, spoke at a library, then at a Jr. High school, and am currently working on a TOP SECRET TLS related project that is so much fun, I can't wait to share it with you--oh and worked on TDD3 a bit, too.

Okay, enough excuses. On to some fun stuff. Like, for example, winners!

First, the landslide favorite for the fantasy casting of Daniel was Mitch Hewer.

Mitch captured 83 votes, giving him 55% of all votes. Alex Pettyfer and Thomas Felton nearly tied for 2nd place with 23 and 22 votes respectively.

That concludes our fantasy casting fun and contest. As an added treat, hubby quickly put together a video for you to summarize the choices you all made for each character. I've pasted it below for your viewing pleasure (winners to the contests are posted below as well).

I have randomly drawn 10 winners to receive a bottle of TLS nail polish for participating. I wish I had enough for everyone, especially as many of you participated through the whole thing. Oh, I have also chosen winners for the extra contest of helping to promote the eBook sale that was taking place this last month (only a day left to get a TDD ebook for only $2.99--the special price ends Nov. 22nd). Winners are as follows:

Fantasy Casting Winners
Jenni Elyse
Vivien
Aleksandra
Becky
Krissi Dallas
Jena
Tori [Book Faery]
Amanda Chenevert
Aubrey
Misha Fitt

eBook Promo Winners
Emily a.k.a WilowRaven
Meg
Melanie
BrittLit
Mundie Moms
Chloe

Winners, please email me at admin@breedespain.com with a mailing address and I'll do my best to get your nail polish out as soon as possible.

One last thing. It is almost November 23rd and that means the TDD paperback will be available this week! My publisher sent me an awesome e-card to announce the occasion and asked me to share with you all... so here you go.

Have any friends who still haven't read the book? You are more than welcome to do a click/save-as and share the e-card with whomever you like. Please feel free to post the card on your blog or facebook page, send a couple emails to those still not on the bandwagon, whatever. Oh, and did I mention that the TDD paperback also includes the first chapter of THE LOST SAINT?

That's all for now. Happy Thanksgiving and stay tuned for November's countdown to TLS contest that will be posted on Nov. 28th (fingers crossed of course).

Halloween pics, Fantasy Casting THE DARK DIVINE movie: Talbot, plus an exclusive exerpt from TLS

10/31/2010

***Upcoming Event: I'll be speaking and signing at the Bingham Creek Library in West Jordan at 7 pm on November 15th. If you come, you may get a chance to get your hands on a paperback copy of TDD that includes the 1st chapter of TLS.***

Happy Halloween, friends! I hope you've had a great weekend. In honor of TLS, I donned a Little Red Riding Hood costume and went out on the town with my very own wolfman/woodsman and a couple of tiny Clone Troopers.

(Is hubs the woodsman who killed the wolf, or the wolf who killed the woodsman?--You decide.)

(Little Red, post kicking some wolf butt)

(KidA felt very empowered by that Clone Trooper gun. He blasted anything remotely scary away with it--including every sweet grandma who opened the door while we were trick or treating--in the pouring rain.)

I have to apologize for all silence and slowness on the blog lately. I got hit with an unexpected deadline this past week that totally took over my life. And I'm so ashamed that I missed October's Countdown to THE LOST SAINT contest. Since we haven't finished our Fantasy Casting fun, I've decided to wait until we're done with that before starting a new giveaway. (But I promise it'll be worth the wait!)

So Nathan Fillion won our poll for playing Pastor Divine with 46 votes (40%) and Tim Daly came in second with 36 votes (31%).

Our next contestant for our fantasy casting is a new one for most of you:

NATHAN TALBOT

Talbot is a new character in THE LOST SAINT and plenty tasty--and instead of just giving you a physical description, I thought I'd give you an exclusive excerpt from TLS (Eep!--at least that's how I feel about sharing it.)

So are you ready to meet Talbot?

I turned to dash from the scene, but I’d taken only a few
stumbling steps in my stupid heels when I ran straight into
what seemed to be a flannel-covered brick wall.

“Whoa, there. You okay?”

The brick wall speaks?

I took a slight step back and looked up to see that I’d
smacked right into the chest of a guy wearing a flannel
shirt. He looked down at me with wide green eyes.

“I’m sorry,” I said, and took another step back. “I
didn’t see you there.”

But really, I didn’t know how I hadn’t noticed this guy
before. I mean, if I thought I stood out here, how had I
not noticed someone like him in a place like this? While
the current fashion statement in the club involved ink
and an abundance of black, this guy wore a green flannel
shirt, light blue jeans, and a large bronze antiquey-looking
belt buckle that resembled a Texas marshal’s
star. He had wavy hair the color of milk chocolate that
stuck out from under the edges of his blue baseball cap,
and his tan face was completely free of weird markings
or bad facial hair, unlike most of the guys here. I looked
down, expecting him to be wearing cowboy boots, but
instead he had on a pair of gray Nike running shoes—
otherwise, he would have looked like he’d sauntered
right in here off a ranch or farm or something.

He gave me a friendly smile—making his tanned,
chiseled cheeks dimple—and he wrapped his warm fingers
around my elbow. “A pretty girl like you should be
more careful in a place like this,” he said, and pulled
me farther away from the fight that brewed behind me.

“Yeah. Um. I know. Sorry.”

His large, callused hand was still on my elbow. His
words—pretty girl like you—finally sank into my brain.
I bit my lip as heat rushed into my cheeks. I wanted to
excuse myself and run off to hide in the bathroom or
something.

The guy’s smile widened, and it struck me that there
was something about him—perhaps the shape of his
mouth, or the tone of his voice—that seemed inexplicably,
yet comfortingly, familiar. Like the first wafting
scent of warm caramel-apple pie on Thanksgiving Day
after a full year of not having tasted it. . .

(Oh, and also of note, Talbot is in his early 20s.)

Now are you ready to pick an actor to play our "tasty new treat" (as April calls him) in a TLS movie?

Kellan Lutz (Cute, and got the most nominations [8] but is he too Twilight famous?)

Matt Lanter (Yes, I know, Matt was the winner for Pete Bradshaw, but this pic of him looks so much like the Talbot in my head that I couldn't not include him.)

Channing Tatum (Nice jawline--may be a bit too old, though.)

Jared Padalecki (Looks hott! in plaid flannel)

Jensen Ackles (also hott!)

Now be sure to vote in the poll up over in the sidebar and leave comment on this post for another entry to win 1 of 10 bottles of TLS nail polish. The poll will be open until Tuesday (11/2/2010) at 6:30 pm.

Also, keep spreading the word about the $2.99 ebook promotion of THE DARK DIVINE and leave a comment telling me what you did in order to win 1 of 5 additional bottles of nail polish. (I'll announce winners for this sometime next week.)

Now go vote!

P.S. What did you dress up as for Halloween?

Fantasy casting THE DARK DIVINE movie: Jude Divine

***I'm participate in a the YA Spooktacular. It's a ghost story told in a round by a bunch of YA authors and writers. I wrote part 2 of the story called A SOUL LAID BARE that was posted today. You can read my part of the story HERE and find the links to the other parts of the stories.

Also, I'm speaking and signing at the St. George Book Festival on Saturday, October 23st at 1:00 pm. If you're in the area, come check out the event.***
Emily Osment won with 31 votes out of 87 (35 %) to play April Thomas. Sasha Pieterse came in second with 20 votes (22%).
Now on to the next character candidate:
JUDE DIVINE

Physical description: Almost 18. Short, dark brown, hair. Violet eyes. Square jaw. Also has a "roman nose." Jude and Grace look very much like brother and sister.

So Chase Crawford and Pen Bagdley got the most nominations for Jude, but even thought I love both of them, I decided both are a little too old for playing high school students now. (Note: If you haven't noticed, I decided to narrow down to the nominations to only actors/actresses the right age to play the characters now. There were so many great nominations, I had to do something to help narrow it down.)

Logan Lerman (What a cutie!)

Adam Gregory (Those eyes!!)

Zac Efron (Used to be anit-Zac, but I loved him in 17 AGAIN. Totally a Zac-convert now.)

Nolan Gerard Funk (Kinda pale, but he looks a lot like the Jude in my head.)

Gregg Sulkin (Maybe a little goofy looking, but he has cute potential.)
Okay, remember to vote up over in the SIDEBAR and LEAVE A COMMENT to be entered to win 1 of 10 bottle os TLS nail-polish. This poll will be open until 3:30pm on Sunday, October 24th.

Fantasy Casting THE DARK DIVINE movie: April Thomas

10/20/2010

***I'm speaking at the St George Book Festival this Saturday at 1:00. If you're in the area, come on over to the festival and visit me.***

Wow, Matt Lanter won by a landslide to play Pete Bradshaw with 45 votes out of 106 (that's 42%). Except I kinda liked the idea of Matt playing Talbot . . . but the people have definitely spoken! Robbie Amell came in second with 32 votes (30%)

Next up in our fantasy casting is April Thomas, best friend of Grace Divine. Surprisingly, she was one of the hardest characters to narrow down the nominations for--there were so many great suggestions!

Remember to vote in the poll over on the SIDEBAR and LEAVE A COMMENT if you want to be entered to win 1 of 10 bottles of TDD nail polish. Each character you vote for (and comment on) will get you an entry into the giveaway. . . so that's 8 possible entries total.

So here we go. . .

APRIL THOMAS

Physical description: Age 16. Blond, curly hair that resembles Cocker Spaniel ears. Blue eyes. Has that Minnesota "Scandinavian" look.

Taylor Swift (I'm an indie music kind of girl, but I have a lot of respect for Taylor. Plus, I thought she was really cute in Valentine's Day--where she played the BFF of Emma Roberts, our winner for Grace Divine.)

Sasha Pieterse (her hair of reminds me of cocker spaniel ears like April's)

Katija Pevec (love her smile--it feels like April's to me)

Anna-Sophia Robb (I absolutely love her! And I think KidZ has had a crush on her ever since he watched Bridge to Terrabithia)

Emily Osment (Totally rockin' the cocker spaniel ears look, don't you think?)

Ok, be sure to vote AND comment! The poll will be open until Friday at 2:30pm (MST).

Sunday, October 17, 2010

Fantasy Casting THE DARK DIVINE movie: Pete Bradshaw

10/17/2010

***Business First: I'll be speaking at the Saint George Book Festival this Saturday at 1:00 pm, and I will be a featured author at the Provo Teen Book Festival on October 30th (along with Scott Westerfeld!! and others) from Noon until 4:00 pm. Oh, and be sure to check out this article in the Deseret News to hear more about how the TDD movie deal came about.***

Sorry for the delay on this post--My computer and Blogger are having a little spat. Not sure who's at fault, though.
We had a great voting turnout for casting Grace Divine. 177 votes in all!
Emma Roberts ended up winning the race with 60 votes (33%) but Allison Miller came in at a close second with 54 votes (30%).

(Winner: Emma Roberts!)

Remember to come back and vote (AND leave a comment on the post) for each character because I'll be selecting 10 random voters to win a bottle of the TLS nail-polish--and each character you vote for equals and entry into the giveaway.

Our next contestant on Fantasy Cast THE DARK DIVINE movie is:
PETE BRADSHAW
Physical description: Age 18. Big and athletic. Captain of the school's hockey team. Rusty colored hair. April describes him as having a "triple threat" smile.

It was really, really hard, but I managed to narrow it down to my top four choices (including the actor most nominated).

And the nominees are:

Cris Olivero (Really like his look, but according to Google Images, he doesn't smile very often).

Kellan Lutz (Got the most nominations [8] and has a great smile--but looking he's kinda too old to play 18 years old.)

Matt Lanter (Great look)

Robbie Amell ( Great smile)

Now consider your choices carefully, vote for your favorite in the poll up over there in the SIDEBAR, and then be sure to LEAVE A COMMENT on this post if you want to be entered to win the nail polish.

The Pete Poll will be open until 2:30 pm (MST) on Tuesday, October 19th.
