Countdown To The Dark Divine Contest: Help me title my new book!

(Note: If you came here looking for info about the street team, click here.)

Shout outs to some awesome friends:

1. Congratulations to bff Emily Wing Smith for winning The Utah Book award for her exceptional YA novel THE WAY HE LIVED. The awards ceremony was neat, and our adventures afterward were some of our wackiest--complete with blood, gore, cheesecake, and Brodi Ashton walking barefoot down 4th South and me screaming things like, "Don't smell that, you might get hepatitis!" I'm sure Brodi will blog about it in much funnier ways than me, so be sure to pop over there.

2. Congrats to James Dashner and his whirl-wind tour of the USA to promote his new book THE MAZE RUNNER. Plus, he was featured in two articles in PW Daily yesterday, and according to them, the book is doing A-Mazing.

3. And huge congrats to new friend Becca Fitzpatrick whose novel HUSH HUSH is debuting at #10 on the NYT bestseller list!!! YAY! She'll be signing at several Utah Costcos over the weekend, so if you are in the area, check out her schedule here.

Shout out for myself:

Did you guys see my beautiful ad in PW Daily? It's run three times over the last week. It's so beautiful. Click here to see it, then scroll down until you see it in its purple glory.

Okay, on with actual post:

HOLY CRAP, SO I JUST REALIZED THAT IT'S ONLY 2 MONTHS UNTIL THE RELEASE OF THE DARK DIVINE!!!! Excitement! Joy! Fear! Trepidation!

So, this next month is going to be a bit crazy. I am attempting to finish the first draft of the sequel to The Dark Divine in the next 32 days. As a result, my brain power failing....words not coming.... loosing ability to type...

Sooooo, yeah. The rest of this blog post will be short and too the point (I hope) and my posts will likely be a bit sparse between now and November 23rd. Never fear, though. The Street Team will still be announced a couple days after the deadline (which is the October 26th btw if you have not yet applied. And if you haven't applied, why not? And if you have no idea what I'm talking about, click here).

Ok, on to the point. Time to celebrate only 2 months left! This month the prizes are as follows:

Prize #1: signed copy of WAR DANCES by Sherman Alexie, and a signed copy of THE MAZE RUNNER by James Dashner
Prize #2: signed copy of ONCE WAS LOST by Sara Zarr
Prize #3: signed copy of HUSH HUSH by Becca Fitzpatrick

So here's what you gotta do for me if you want to be entered in the contest. As I mentioned, I am in the middle of writing the sequel to THE DARK DIVINE. I am loving spending more time with the characters from TDD and am very excited about where the story is going, but here's the deal, it doesn't have a title yet. Got any suggestions? (No titles with spoilers please!) (UPDATE: I'm thinking of things that either play of the words "dark" or "divine" or "desire" or "Grace" or "temptation" or some variation of similar words--yet not something that sounds like a steamy Harlequin romance novel.) Post a comment to be entered into the contest. Rules are below:

1.) Must be a follower of the blog and post a comment to qualify (UPDATE: You don't have to suggest a book title . . . you can always just say"hi")
2.) Answer question = 1pt
3.) Already a follow of blog = 2pt, Become a follower = 1pt
4.) Already a twitter follower = 2pt, Become a twitter follower = 1pt
5.) Tweet contest = 1pt.
6.) Post contest on your blog = 1pt

The contest ends at 11:59 pm on October 28th. Winners will be announced sometime within the next two days after that. . . I promise . . . assuming I'm still alive.

Okay, back to my writing cave. And don't forget to spread the word about the STREET TEAM!!! We need you!!

Congrats to Emily! And thanks for the heads up about Costco ... I've been putting off a trip and now have a reason to brave the Saturday checkout lines! Good luck with the title search for TDD2. Hope the writing goes smoothly for the next 31 days.

2.) 1pt I usually enjoy titles that appear in the book at some point, but having not read the sequel I will not know of this yet. I think a cool title could be the Moonless Midnight, or the Moon at Midnight. Beautiful Awakening? I don't know it's hard when you don't know what the story is and what it is trying to accomplish. Hopefully those can at least spark your mind.

Wow, this is a hard one. I agree that I usually like the title to be an integral part of the book. But, based on sequel related titles, I'd use on of the following words: Blue, Black, White, or Light. I don't have any great combos though.

Hi Bree :)
It's hard to come up with a title without knowing what the second book is about. Assuming you want it tying into The Dark Divine somehow, I was thinking something with the word Divine included, ie: The Divine Rules.

I heard the tamale guy has a heard of friends who love deadlines. And are willing to hurt those that can't make 'em. Dun dun dun.... (uhm I was sent by BA, I'm not trying to be really crazy by myself).

I agree with Brodi ... write away sister friend. Write away.

But, I'm assuming you've been writing all morning and need a break, so I offer some name inspiration. OK, they've probably already been suggested, and it's still "a.m." ...

Tempting Grace
The Divine Temptation
The Darkening Grace
The Dark Desire (kinda steamy though)
Defining Grace
Divining Grace
Grace Be Thine

OK, now my brain is a swirly jumble.

Emily Wing Smith said...

Okay, what's up with the insane number of comments? Bree, you rock. I can understand why you're too busy to talk to me! P.S That's an lol if you're unsure, I harbor no grudges.

If this comment goes through I will consider myself queen of the world!

As for titles, I heard somewhere that the bestselling titles had the words secret, mystery, and horse in them. Of course, I heard this when I was a kid, so long ago. How about something more contemporary, like "Breaking the New Moon: The Dark Divine at Twilight".

I know, know you see why I don't comment. Your blog blocks my lame-o ideas. I do not blame it.

You know you love me! xoxo

I am not here for the contest, I am here to inform you that the music you're hearing is not the money you could be saving with Geico. I'm checking in on your 45 pages, where are you now???

Tamale guy told me all about the throw down in the parking lot.

And what is with you not rooting for BYU?

(Okay, had to show that us BA followers do have guts and hopefully gave you a laugh so you can clear your mind and keep writing!)

But,just for fun because I can't resist, how about a few title options: Divine Darkness, Graceful Temptation, Gracefully Divine, The Dark Apple (apple as in temptation since The Dark Temptation sounds Harlequin), The Dark Lure...

'The Moonlights Divine'

Thanks a lot Bro, thanks a lot. But seriously, thanks for going all Queen Latifa on my b-hind. Keep it up.

What about your old title, Daniel Divine? I can only guess what the sequel might be about, but maybe The Deadly Divine. I like how the first title pits two things that feel like opposites and feels like it creates a new idea. Maybe the second title could match that.

Brodi- thanks for sending people to my blog. I've gotten a few more followers out of it. And some good encouragement/threats.

Good luck writing 45 pages! If you don't finish, it might not be enchilada sauce that is on your next tamale. *insert dramatic music here*

Ha ha! Awesome threat, Becky.

brickhouse79 said...

Um... Brodi... didn't she just thank you? As in-- today? And frankly, she probably will do it again tomorrow too. Sheesh, I thought you were more observant than that.

Bree- seriously!? What are you doing here reading comments!? I really don't want to see your legs broken. Then I'd have to carry you everywhere. And it'd get all weird like that midget riding on the back of the giant dude in Mad Max and the Thunderdome. Oh, and the whole "you'll be in pain" thing.

Get to work!! (apparently this tomale guy has it in for you)

Bree Biesinger Despain said...

Just so you all know, I have officially thrown down the gauntlet and I'm challenging Brodi back. She has 2 weeks from today to finish her current work in progress. It's a novel called BROKEN, which Brodi will be if she doesn't finish her darn book by the deadline.

So now go back over to her blog and tell her to stop commenting and get cracking. She's been working on her first draft for almost a year, for Pete's sake! I'm attempting to write my whole first draft in a month, so yeah, who's the pansy now, huh?

Hi Mary and BookMac! It's always fun to have new commentors. Sorry you're late for the contest, but I do a new one every 22nd of the month.

Alaina Evans said...

Finally posting title ideas.....

My first thoughts wrapped around Divine Light or A Divine Light. Definitely thinking that you should keep Divine or Grace in the title. Grace Divine or Divine Grace but I'm still thinking. I'm also thinking of Jude and Daniel. Everyone has changed, everyone has a new beginning, almost like a rebirth. So...... maybe that too should be acknowledged. Which kinda leaves me having brain cramps.

Are you going to have it coincide with a parable? And please tell me that the walnut tree will be mentioned at least once. I love that tree!!

More titles:

Divine Redemption
A Redeeming Grace
The Divine Deliverance (TDD)
The Saving Grace

So far The Divine Deliverance is my favorite.

Best of Luck!!

Alaina :)

Alaina Evans said...

Hey- I know the contest is over but wanted to help anyway. Seems like I'm always a day late and a dollar short :)

Alaina

Bree Biesinger Despain said...

Thanks for the suggestions, Alaina! And yes, the Walnut tree will always have a place in the story. I'm also basing the sequel on the parable of the Good Samaritan--although pretty loosely. More in theme than actual events.
